One aspect of our Colorado dude ranch we put a lot of time and energy into is our children’s program. There is a program for children ages 3 to 19 fill
ed with many different fun and adventurous dude ranch activities. One of the most popular and anticipated activities at our Colorado dude ranch for the Rough Riders (children ages 6-11) is the horseback ride to the Secret Fort. The Secret Fort at our Colorado dude ranch has really turned into a legendary horseback ride and adventure which none of the kids want to miss!
The Secret Fort began about four years ago when the Rough Rider’s counselor stopped for a break on the trail and started stacking logs to build a little fort. My nephews, Wyatt and Carson, and neice, Harlie Anne, thought this was the coolest idea and fort ever! So, the next week they made that same stop on the trail and built more on the fort. Well, days turned into weeks, weeks turned into summers and summers turned into years. The fort is still a work in progress but currently has two rooms, doorways, windows, sidewalks and even a garden (no real plants, but certainly imaginary).
Many kids have heard the stories about the Secret Fort and enjoyed playing there. Rough Riders have been known to turn down many activities to ensure they don’t miss the ride to the Secret Fort. Just this past week we had a Rough Rider bail out on whitewater rafting to make sure he didn’t miss the ride to the Secret Fort. Other kids have abandoned parents, grandparents and siblings so they didn’t miss this horseback ride!
You never know what adventure waits at the Secret Fort. We have even had Rough Riders do a civil war reenactment at the Secret Fort with their horses. Once thing is sure, there is plenty of fun and imagination waiting on this adventure! Kids, just make sure you don’t tell your parents where the Secret Fort is located. It’s a secret!!
Happy Trails,
