October is prime hunting in Colorado and every fall we get a few hunting groups out to our Colorado guest ranch. Hunters come to our guest ranch for a little different reasons than those looking for family dude ranch vacations but they are always a lot of fun to have around and always bring back to the ranch GREAT stories of their hunting experiences of the day.
One of the best stories from this hunting season was when the guys came upon a group of 40+ elk! This was just down the road a few miles from our Colorado guest ranch and the hunters were so excited. As they were tracking the herd, the guys soon realized all the elk were just over the fence on private property! The hunters couldn’t believe it! A huge herd of elk and they couldn’t even shoot at a single one! I remember when they came back to our dude ranch that night for dinner. The guys were going on and on about this huge herd of elk they weren’t even able to shoot at. The next couple days the hunters stayed after this herd until the elk finally crossed over to national forest land. Then, at last, they were able to try and get one! This story is just a sample of the fun and excitement hunters always seem to have out at our Colorado guest ranch.
Kelvin and Kurtis (two oldest Tesch brothers) typically go hunting every fall as well. This year Kelvin got a mule deer. This meat goes a long way in feeding his family through the winter months. They are very fortunate to be able to feed their children organic, healthy, hormone and steroid free meat! Plus, Bridget knows how to make everything taste delicious!
Thank you for reading our blog and staying up with the happenings at TRR! If you have any interesting or comical hunting stories of your own, please share them with us in the comments below and remember, elk are pretty smart animals!
Happy trails,

Great story.! I reminded of the time I went hunting with my husband when we were just married and remember, I am a city girl. Well after three days of cold, misery and no deer in site, I was ready to kill with bare hands just to get my sorry body back to civilization… no such luck. We DID see a happy deer family cross the road just as soon as we had put our guns back in the car and were ready to leave. I am sure those deer were there all along, just waiting for us to leave and laugh at us !
Things have changed since then, I learned to make deer chili, tacos, stew and a truly delicious sauce that goes beautifully with our home made egg noodles. And yes, I love to eat meat that is organic, grass fed and from an animal who lived his natural life until he met my husband!
Howdy Barbara! It is great to hear from you! Thank you for sharing the story about your hunting adventures. The cold and misery is definitely NOT the fun part of hunting! It is really amazing how smart those deer and elk are! They certainly seem to know when hunting season is and who the hunters are!
Sounds like you have learned to make some delicious dishes out of your deer meat! I am getting hungry just thinking about it!
Thanks again for the story! Keep in touch and we hope to see you at the ranch again soon! And bring your recipes for deer chili and that sauce!
Happy trails,
Kody
